Why Is Lord Dhanvantari Worshipped on Dhanteras?

People worship Lord Dhanvantari on Dhanteras because this day is believed to be Dhanvantari Jayanti. He is revered as the incarnation of Lord Vishnu, physician of the gods, and the founder of medicine and Ayurveda.

He appeared during the churning of the cosmic ocean by the devas and asuras. Traditionally, He is believed to have emerged with a pot of amrit and is seen as the giver of Ayurveda to humanity.

Significance of Lakshmi-Kubera Worship on Dhanteras

Goddess Lakshmi is known as the source of wealth, and Lord Kubera is known as the treasurer of the gods. Worshipping both on Dhanteras is a significant ritual that devotees perform to honor the deities and invite their blessings for fortune and financial stability.

Their roles complement each other: Lakshmi bestows wealth, while Kubera helps protect it. Beyond material wealth, Lakshmi-Kubera worship on Dhanteras means inviting prosperity with gratitude and using it with dharma for the family and society's well-being.

The Story of King Hima’s Son

Long ago, a king named Hima had a 16-year-old son. One day, one of his astrologers told him that his son would die on the fourth day after his marriage because of a snakebite. Hearing this prophecy, the King grew anxious and began seeking advice on a way to save his son’s life.

The King found a wise and fortunate princess for his son to marry. After the marriage, on the fourth day, everyone became very fearful. That day, the prince's wife told him not to sleep, lit diyas around him and throughout the palace, placed gold and silver coins at the entrance, and sang songs for her husband.

When Yamraj arrived as a serpent to take the prince’s life, the sparkling lights of the diyas and the reflections of the coins blinded him, so he could not reach the prince. Yamraj then spent the whole night listening to the princess's sweet songs.

In the morning, the serpent left without taking the prince's life, as the hour of his death had already passed.

Yamdeepdaan: Meaning, Significance and Vidhi

Yamdeepdaan is a ritual performed on Dhanteras that involves offering diya to Lord Yamraj, the God of Death, dharma, and justice. It is performed during the Pradosh kaal.

The Skanda Purana describes its significance: lighting a diya during Pradosh kaal is believed to protect the family from untimely death. Moreover, this is also reflected in the traditional legend of King Hima's son, explained above.

Yamdeepdaan Vidhi (Step by Step)

  1. After the evening puja, take an earthen lamp and fill it with mustard oil.
  2. Light it with four wicks (or a single wick, as per your family tradition).
  3. Place it outside the main door, facing south.
  4. Pray to Lord Yamraj for your family's protection and long life.
