अन्नं दानं महादानं लोकेऽस्मिन् परिकीर्तितम्। अन्नदानेन मनुष्याणां तृप्तिर्भवति शाश्वती॥
The donation of food is declared as the greatest donation in this world. By the donation of food, humans attain eternal satisfaction.
Dharma Shastras
क्षुधार्तस्य अन्नदानं हि सर्वदा परमं तपः। तस्मात् तत् सततं कार्यं धर्मार्थं मोक्षकांक्षिभिः॥
Giving food to the hungry is always the supreme austerity (Tapas). Therefore, it should be constantly performed by those who desire Dharma (righteous conduct), Artha (wealth), Kama (desire), and Moksha (liberation).
